Many people have wearable electronic devices nowadays. Smart clothes are not yet so common, yet have a great future we can look forward to. Recently, a lab at MIT has been trying to do human body pressure measurements by using smart textiles which can tightly conform to the wearer’s body. “They note that by using textiles, there is a lot of flexibility in the design process”, thus, besides monitoring various body data, the team sees more medical possibilities in this technology. I’ve worn a chest strap for running, and it always shifts or loses contact once I sweat heavily. If smart textiles can keep electrodes stable through movement and repeated washing, that alone would make everyday heart monitoring far more practical than another gadget I have to remember to charge.

The gap between wearable gadgets and actual smart clothing stuck with me. It’s easy to strap on a watch, but weaving sensors into fabric that survives washing and daily wear feels like the real hurdle. I wonder how close we are to textiles that doctors could actually rely on for continuous monitoring.
